Teens, city officials talk issues By Ruby Nancy QUAD-CITY TIMES "We just think one of the steps is to get people together. If we do get together, we can achieve it." Andre Miller was in the role of spokesperson for his roundtable group when he gave that answer to a question on how ideas to make Davenport a better place for teenagers can become reality: But he might as well have been speaking for all 80 or so of the high school students who attended a special breakfast Thursday at the RiverCenter. The breakfast was sponsored by the Davenport Youth Board (primarily comprised of student council officers from five Davenport high school programs), and it offered a chance for students from all over the city to interact with a variety of municipal officials over a meal and in roundtable discussions.

Like the representatives of the other roundtable groups, Miller had plenty of things to list as responses to the question about "strong points or good qualities" of Davenport: safety, good schools and education, family friendly communities, its location along the Mississippi River and entertainment options. Nearly every group listed personal safety and education as positive things for Davenport teens. Miller, a student in the 2001 Alternative High School program, and the rest of his group (which included students from Central and West high schools) were particularly complimentary of the school system "Our teachers really care" and echoed the priorities of many of the roundtable groups in response to other questions as well. As for what would make Davenport a better place for teens, nearly every group mentioned a recreation or teen center as a major improvement they hope for. Most groups, like Miller's, also focused on themselves as part of the solution to the problem of improving the city, citing teen involvement in community activities, volunteerism, communication between groups and teenorganized fund raising as being critical to change for the better.

Melissa Riley, a senior at Davenport North who has been involved with the Youth Board all the way through high school, said the board and the breakfast are good for Davenport teen-agers. "It's given us more of a voice in Davenport. Lots of the city council members can't relate to being a teen-ager. They don't know what we need or want unless we tell They're always willing to hear and Rock Valley Florist 3009 18th. Ave.
