A brand-new Ghostbusters movie is on the horizon.
In 2021,Ghostbusters: Afterlife breathed new life into the Ghostbusters franchise after it had seemingly been locked away forever in Sony Pictures’ Ecto Containment Unit following the disaster that was the Paul Feig-directed 2016 reboot, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.
The legacy threequel introduced new characters such as McKenna Grace’s Phoebe Spengler and Paul Rudd’s Gary Grooberson, with cameos from original characters like Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman and Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore. The film grossed $204.3M worldwide against a $75M budget, so the studio wasted no time in green-lighting a sequel.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) saw the return of all the characters from the previous film, with another major legacy character from the 1984 original (William Atherton’s Walter Peck) thrown in for good measure. The film grossed $201.9M against a larger budget of $100M, however, it was met with mostly negative reviews from fans and critics.
However, while Frozen Empire failed to wow audiences like its 2021 predecessor did, Gil Kenan, the director of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife) has confirmed that there’s more to come for the theatrical side of the franchise.

In an interview with The Direct, while promoting his new movie Saturday Night, Gil Kenan revealed that he’s currently in talks with Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman (who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) about future Ghostbusters movies.
“The answer is yes, Jason [Reitman]…We take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of Ghostbusters very seriously,” he said. “We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbusters stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more. There’ll be more about that later.”
Kenan and Reitman are currently working on an animated Ghostbusters television series on Netflix. “And I’ve spoken recently about the fact that we are in very active development on our animated series that we’re producing with Netflix,” Kenan also revealed.
“That is something that I’m actively involved with Jason on a day-to-day basis right now, we are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”
The untitled 3D animated Ghostbusters series will be produced by Kenan and Reitman under Ghost Corps, Sony Pictures Animation, and Netflix.
While plot details are unknown, Kenan has previously described the project as “the next generation ofGhostbusters animated television” that will “reach into the future” of “an unexplored era and decade of Ghostbusters canon.”

There are no other details about the next Ghostbusters movie, however, following the release of Frozen Empire in theaters earlier this year, Kenan talked about the film’s secret ending, which features the “Mini-Pufts” who can be seen stealing an 18-wheeler from a gas station.
“Jason and I definitely have a story up our sleeves that continues that narrative thread,” he told EW earlier this year. “There’s more trouble where that came from. Nothing we can talk about yet, but it feels like those guys [the Mini-Pufts] have way more story to tell.”
“Plus, it’s always fun to work with the magnificently murderous marshmallows,” he later joked. “I love those guys; they’re so fun to direct. [They’re] primadonnas. Their rider is impossible, but it’s worth it for what they do onscreen.”
“In terms of where else this goes, look, we really care about the [human] characters in this film [Frozen Empire]. We feel like there is more story to be told. And I’m really hoping audiences connect with the adventure that the Spengler family goes on in this film. And if they do, then I really hope that we can continue this story.”
